TERASUN project

TERASUN is an ambitious project uniting recognized photovoltaic (PV) experts across the EU with a collective aim—to advance technologies that enhance the efficiency and reduce the cost of crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV solar cells and modules. The project fosters innovation advantageous to all c-Si cell technologies, placing special emphasis on silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cell technology.

Objectives

Increase efficiency and reduce costs

TERASUN will use silicon heterojunction solar technology as a showcase and strives towards enhanced device efficiency and reduce production costs for crystalline silicon solar cells and modules, facilitating their mass production.

Specific technological improvements

TERASUN will advance PV technology by optimizing light trapping at cell and at module level through novel textures and nanophotonic structures, enhancing contacts with novel heterojunctions, using cost-effective copper metallisation, and applying indium-free transparent conductive oxides to lower costs.

Environmental and economic impact

TERASUN will minimize environmental impact by using non-critical materials and optimizing their use. Device performance, environmental and economic impact data will be collected and evaluated to create a decision support tool that provides technological recommendations and a roadmap towards TRL9.

Intellectual property
protection

TERASUN will generate patents to protect resulting intellectual property, facilitating the exploitation of results and positioning EU companies as leaders in the PV technology sector.

Alignment with EU Goals

TERASUN aligns with the European Green Deal and the EU's "Fit for 55" package, which sets ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase renewable energy to 40% by 2030. By improving PV technology efficiency, the project will help reduce the EU's dependence on fossil fuels and technological imports, promoting energy independence and supporting the EU's renewable hydrogen strategy.
