The TERASUN project

TERASUN aims to boost c-Si PV cell efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Focusing on silicon heterojunction cell technology, it aims to reach a power conversion efficiency of over 26.81%. Innovations include advanced surface textures for better light absorption at cell and module level as well as improved durability and low-maintenance module cover glass. Novel heterojunction contacts will enable advanced cell architectures like interdigitated-back-contacted designs while keeping the fabrication costs low. Copper electro plating processes will revolutionise metallisation, avoiding cost-intensive silver contacts.

And lastly, pioneering processes to deposit indium-free transparent conductive oxides will be developed circumventing the In-bottleneck linked to terawatt production of SHJ devices. Pushing these technologies TERASUN will minimise environmental impact and costs, thereby increasing mass production readiness. The data obtained from the development will shape a decision support tool, guiding industry stakeholders and policymakers towards TRL9.

A new vision in renewable energy
